ROARING CAMP AND BIG TREES RAILROAD
A SHAY-POWERED ADVENTURE INTO THE REDWOODS
JULY 3, 2006
As we approached the station, a Shay was bringing an empty train to the platform.
The engine pulled up to the water tower, but apparently it didn't need water this time.
Here's a closeup of the cylinders, steaming hot and ready for the uphill trip.
Tom, Charlotte, Steph, and Jack are smiling from their seats in the enclosed car.  The
Conductor was advising passengers to ride the open cars, but we stayed put.
Shortly after we left the station, the train started its steep climb up the mountain.  The
smoke looks almost like fire as it hits the bright sunshine.  The engine is oil fired to
reduce the chance of starting a fire with hot cinders.
